Centuries ago the Spartans already preformed the art of functional training with your own bodyweight. By means of this training they gained more strength and the elite army became more powerful. The Spartans used nature and self-made horizontal bars in their training. The movements they executed were beautiful and powerful. From these two words the name Calisthenics originate. This word can be split up in two Greek words, Kalos and Sthenos, what literally means, beautiful strength.
This beautiful strength now travels the whole world. In almost every city they build horizontal bars in public parks and people will build a little calisthenics park in their backyards. Gym’s also start to place extra horizontal bars to meet the demand. To be able to train anywhere, anytime, brings a lot of advantage. Not only in planning your training but also in the social aspect. You will always find someone to train with in a public park. The sport also draws a lot of attention from outsiders, when they see you perform they often not only ask what you are doing, but also how you started. Besides that, the ‘how do I start?’ is an important thing in calisthenics. Calisthenics can be started at all levels, from no experience at all up to a lot of experience. Don’t ask yourself ‘how’ to start, but when!
